About me

I'm Sophie, welcome to my therapy practice in North Shields.

I am a Psychotherapeutic Counsellor and qualified from Northern Guild, Counselling & Psychotherapy in 2024. I have experience working in the charity and healthcare sectors with people of all ages and backgrounds, helping clients untangle anxiety, depression, identity changes, self-esteem, grief and loss, relationships (and more).

There are different types of therapy available; some people prefer structure and exercises, others just need the space to be heard and explore. My therapeutic approach is somewhere in between, I pull from different approaches such as person-centred, CBT, creative practice, mindfulness and tailor my approach to what you need. I do enjoy bringing theory and models into the room to help the therapeutic work and give clients the tools to start applying concepts to everyday life, and I am happy to share resources between sessions.

I am person-centred, which means my core belief is that everyone has an inherent capacity for growth and self-healing. My clients have described me as kind, warm, easy to talk to, and non-judgemental.

Before retraining as a Psychotherapeutic Counsellor, I worked in HR in the Higher Education sector, helping people with work-related stress, conflict and disputes, workplace adjustments, and confidence coaching. I'm all too aware of the impact that mental health can have at work - and vice versa - and have been drawn to supporting people more directly in a counselling position for a long time.

Outside of counselling, I enjoy spending time with my husband, daughter and British bulldog Betty, taking in our beautiful coastline.

What got me into counselling?

The value of having a safe, supportive and non-judgmental space, and sitting opposite a kind and understanding person cannot be underestimated. I experienced my own mental health challenges as a young person and know what it is like to suffer with anxiety, depression and panic, and I am privileged to be able to offer people the same support I found so invaluable when I needed it.
